Mirza Ghalib – Jagjit & Chitra Singh

Mirza Ghalib is the Amitabh Bachchan of Urdu Poetry. You haven’t read Urdu Sukhan if you haven’t read Ghalib. The essence of his poetry to me is his philosophy and how he extends the Ghazal from being a Love Poem to encompassing a vast array of ideas and sentiments.

Every Ghazal singer worth his salt has tried to sing Ghalib, but no one matches the purity & simplicity of Jagjit’s compositions. These Ghazals are from Gulzar’s TV Series called “Mirza Ghalib”. Nasseruddin Shah did a splendid act as the ill-fated poet. Ghalib is not easy to perform, but here is Jagjit’s Masterpiece for your pleasure.

Ghazal is a  bit heavy on use of Persian but great opening line – Zulmatkade mein mere Shab-e-Gham ka Josh hai.

Loosely translated as – “My dark room is filled with evening Blues”. Since then  “Shab-e-Gham”  is commonly used by Poets in their writings. It ends on a wonderful “Maqta”

“jalaa hia jism jahaa.N dil bhii jal gayaa hogaa
kuredate ho jo ab raakh justajuu kyaa hai ” – Hmm fingering a broken hearted poet is bound to raise a reaction.

“rago.n me.n dau.Date phirane ke ham nahii.n qaayal
jab aa.Nkh hii se na Tapakaa to phir lahuu kyaa ha” – Wow , the intensity of pain.

So here ends my post on Ghalib by Jagjit  & Chitra. Looking to post some other artists but some other time.
