Shab e furqat ka jaga hu farishto ab tau sone dau, Kabhi fursat me kar lena hisab ahista ahista. (The poet here says that he has been awake from the night he got separated from his lover and he’s asking the angels of death to let him sleep at least now. They can take account of his life later, slowly slowly.)
It has been a year that ghazal lost its most ardent lover — Jagjit Singh. The legendary ghazal singer had special connection with the city of lakes — Bhopal. He has presented the ghazals penned by Padamshree Basheer Badr and internationally acclaimed poet Manzar Bhopali besides an advocate from the state capital Iftekhar Ayub has compered many of his programmes across the country.
In fact, Ayub talked to the legend for over 5 minutes on September 22, 2011, the day when he was hospitalised in critical condition. Ayub recalling the conversation while talking to this correspondent said, “He was chearful as ever and when I told him that I want to dedicate a gallery in his name in my little recording studio in Bhopal he not only permitted me to do so but also said that he would inaugurate it personally on September 26 when he was scheduled to visit the city for a performance in Bharat Bhawan.”
His last words to me were ‘Ayub milte hain 26 tareekh ko’ (Ayub we will meet on 26th.)
Ayub further said, “He was such a great person and was in true means the king of Ghazals. Jagjit Sahab was a towering personality; I am not able to forget him despite making all efforts of doing so.”
He said, “I conducted and compered many programmes of the legendry ghazal singer across the country. I am lucky enough to travel with him on many occasions and got chance to dine with him on couple of occasions.”
He said that on the fateful day of October 10, 2012 I was at work when one of my friend called me to inform about the demise of the legend, I could not believe him and immediately rushed to home for switching on the television to confirm the news, after the conformation of the news I immediately looked for the bookings for Mumbai to participate in the funeral that I could not but attended the condolence meeting on October 14 held at the Mahalaxmi race course attended by many biggies of the music and film world.
He said the legendary ghazal singer used to visit the city as long as since 1975 for performing at private functions.
