BIRTHDAY MEMORIES Dr. Aparna  Chattopadhyay

man ki boondein-jagjit

HAATH CHOOTEN BHI TO RISHTE NAHIN CHOOTA KARTE… DIL KI RAAHON PE JALNE WAALE CHIRAGH, WAQT KI BEREHEM HAWAAON SE NAHIN BUJHA KARTE… FALAK KE TAARE BHI BICHE JAATE HON JIN QADAMON MEIN, AISE QADAMON KE NISHAN NAHIN MITA KARTE… ZINDAGI JIN KE HONE SE HI ZINDAGI HO, DIL KI DUNIA SE WOH KABHI JUDA NAHIN HOTE…

Many warm and loving wishes to you Jagjit ji, on your celestial happy birthday… This morning, I sent my earnest, heartfelt prayers for you—for your ethereal peace and happiness. This Feb. mornings’ pearly dew- drops outside my glass window and the Spring bird –song flashed back in my mind’s eye, nostalgic, fond memories of Feb.8th, 2011, your last birthday…..a memorable and especially auspicious one – as it fell on the sacred ‘Basant- Panchami’ and Saraswati puja day….embalmed by the mild fragrance of  Spring blossoms and coloured   with their myriad hues coupled with the spiritually powerful aura of the Goddess of Fine Arts and knowledge…. A rare gift of a birthday it was indeed… aesthetically, musically, and spiritually charged…. M y birthday note to you had expressed my wishful prophecy: “This is going to be an especially significant year for you’’  Significant it was, yes— though in a rather uncanny way…  for It completed your life’s journey in that very year… A journey, truly meaningful and successful…. having attained the highest peaks, the zenith of your creative genius… touching the lives of millions in a vast and beautiful way… lighting up the deep caverns of their hearts by giving them priceless moments of joy… of tranquillity… of ecstasy. Down the memory lane, those subtle, prophetic lines sung by you for ‘Nivedan’ ( your last devotional album of that year) come to my  mind… “Hey Ma, mera nivedan sunlo/mujhe apne aanchal mein bun lo/phool sa mujh ko chun lo”. And She, the gracious one,did grant you your request… for you indeed became the Chosen—One by Her, for Her heavenly realm that very year. Lovingly offering you Her Divine Grace, she sheltered you in Her lap, away from the earthly anguish, disillusionment and despair. Jagjit ji, you are missed every moment as predicted beautifully by you in an unforgettable song of yours: “ Kabhi khamosh baithoge Kabhi kuch gungunaoge Mein utna yaad aaunga Mujhe jitna bhulaoge….” The velvety touch of your romantic voice….the intricacies and the quintessence of your true-  to- life soulful melodies composed in your inimitable, captivating style…all are so very close to the hearts of millions till today. Your undying charisma is an enigma. Your enchanting compositions reverberate in the psyche of your listeners as your fond memories. Such memories are like fragrance.. “ Muhabbat ek khusbu hai, Hamesha saath chalti hai, Koi insaan tanhai mein bhi, Tanha nahin rehta….” Who can forget these scintillating lines sung by you? Your mesmerizing presence lives on eternally…. As I gaze heavenwards, in the blue of the sky, through my misty windowpanes—I seem to spot you smiling softly, in the effervescent mists of the cosmos…an aura of gentleness surrounding you…and humming those meaningful lines of an old song of yours:

“ Faasila to hai magar, Koi faasila nahin, Mujh se tum juda sahi, Dil se to juda nahin…”

My moist eyes try to follow you desperately in that misty haze…but gradually you seem to disappear in those mysterious clouds…. Pensively, I ponder over those  serene lines… So very true indeed. Inseparable from the hearts of your fans, you are ever present. Those hearts reverberating with your nostalgic memories, recall those sad lines sung by you; “Waqte rukhsat gale laga ke Daagh/ Haste haste rula gaya koi”….. They send you  today, loving blossoms of their sincere gratitude, longing and adoration….and ardent prayers to the Cosmic Powers to grant you eternal, ethereal delight and celestial ecstasy— unfolding a fresh panorama of creativity, insight and brilliance for you — ever expanding your creative dimensions beyond time and space.

  1. A beautiful note with a beautiful photograph. I wish more of us artistes could study the works of our favourite artistes in such detail and connect it so meaningfully. Beautiful ode to the genius of Jagjit Singh ji.

  2. Birth anniversary celebrations of Jagjit ji
It was a precious moment indeed— the thought-provoking snaps of Jagjit ji were released as special stamps by the PM on Feb 8th, 2014 to commemorate his Birth Anniversary. However, it would have been more apt and a beautiful dream – come-true of billions of his ardent fans, had he also been awarded the long awaited and much deserved “Bharat Ratna” for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music.
